Accommodation near Chapman's Peak - 13
Chapman’s Peak is the name ascribed to the southerly section of the Constantiaberg Mountain, which forms part of the Cape Peninsula. Chapman’s Peak is also the name of a scenic road built along the edges of the mountain.
Chapman’s Peak lies on the Atlantic coast, and hikers who like a good challenge will not be disappointed. There are a number of trails which traverse the peak through the Silvermine Nature Reserve and Cape Point. If you choose to do one of these hikes, you will be treated to a wide array of flora – especially impressive, being in the heart of the UNESCO Cape Floral Kingdom. Chappies, as it’s affectionately known, is also a popular spot for trail runners.
Cut into the side of Chapman’s Peak is Chapman’s Peak Drive, one of the most scenic routes in the Western Cape and a major tourist attraction in its own right. The toll road is 9 kilometres long and has no fewer than 114 curves as it hugs the mountain side. It runs between Hout Bay and Noordhoek, offering cyclists, runners and motor vehicle occupants the most spectacular views of the Atlantic as well as the respective suburbs at either end of the road. The road forms part of the Cape Argus Cycle Tour and the Two Oceans Marathon.
The route is a photographer’s dream and there are numerous lay byes and picnic areas along the route where you can pull over to shoot some pictures, have a snack or simply devote your full attention to the scenery.
Chapman’s Peak, as beautiful as it may be, is at times hazardous due to falling rocks, and the road is often closed in winter or during patches of bad weather, so it’s usually best to check the status before setting off.
Distances are shown as the crow flies and not necessarily the actual travelling distance.
