Accommodation near De Waal Park
The De Waal Park entrance is situated on Upper Orange Street in Cape Town, South Africa. It is 12 hectares in size and is open to all members of the public; adults, children and dogs.
This beautiful park at the bottom of Table Mountain has fantastic facilities due to an organisation called 'Friends of De Waal Park' - a group that has taken it upon themselves to ensure a clean and well-equipped public space for interactions between strangers and friends alike.
The most famous features of the park are a Victorian-style fountain, which is a natural artesian well, and a bandstand built for the Cape Town Exhibition in Green Point in 1904/5. There is also a modern children's playground.
De Waal Park was named after the man who conceptualised it, the then-mayor of Cape Town, David Christian De Waal. Mayor De Waal worked lovingly on the park and developed it for a number of years before it was officially opened to the public in 1895.
The park was developed on land that once formed part of the farm, Oranjezicht, which was owned by the Van Brede family. It was bought from them by the Cape Town City Council and divided up into three parts which later became the park and its surrounding suburbs.
The park was fenced off on Camp Street with a kei apple tree hedge in 1900. In March of 1968 the park was proclaimed a National Monument and was to be maintained, forever more, as public gardens. It is now also listed as a Provincial Heritage Site and remains a well-loved community asset, even hosting free, al fresco music concerts during the summer months.

Oranjezicht
I was born in Cape Town and lived in the Peninsula and the northern suburbs for 35 years but never really knew Oranjezicht and the surrounding area. To have lived in Oranjezicht for a couple of days, so close to Table Mountain, and to experience just part of the Platteklip Gorge Hike, was a great adventure for a 79 year young man! The Farmers' market on Saturday morning was another lovely outing.
