The Dordrecht Country Club is a humble littleclub in the small town of Dordrecht in the Eastern Cape. The club serves thetown’s community, which comes to a total of just over 10 000. However, what it lacks in size and pizazz, it makes up for in setting.
The town of Dordrecht is situated to thenorth of Queenstown on a stretch of road between Middleburg and Mthatha(capital of the old Transkei Bantustan). The town was established in 1856 by Baron Smithdorff, who later became aminister of the Dutch Reformed Church. A Dutchman, Smiddorff (his originalDutch name) decide to name the new settlement after his home in the Netherlands– a town on the European continent also known as Dordrecht.
The South African town is nestled in the Stormberg Mountains which create a stunning backdrop, and one of the best places toappreciate this backdrop is out on the golf course. The 9-hole Dordrecht golf course provides enough calm and open space to be able to pause and take in thespectacle of the towering mountains in the distance. Furthermore, the subtropical highland climate is pleasant with warm summers and chilly but clear winters. Most of the rain experienced by the town falls in the summer months between December and March.
In addition to the golf course, DordrechtCountry Club boasts putting greens, a clubhouse and bar, a tennis court and asquash court.
Apart from golf, other attractions in the town include a number of historical buildings and a museum displaying turn of the century furniture and clothing. Dordrecht is predominantly a farming town, andwhile the mountains are the most arresting background scenery, the town is also surrounded by potato, cattle and sheep farms.
