Accommodation near Durban Botanic Gardens - 11
Located in the city of Durban, KwaZulu Natal, on the eastern slopes of the Berea ridge, is the fairy tale-like Durban Botanic Garden. This historical place next to the Umgeni River is Durban's oldest public institution. It was established in 1849 and is the oldest surviving botanic garden on the entire continent of Africa!
The landscape of the Durban Botanic Gardens, which covers 15 hectares, is dominated by a number of large majestic trees of various species. Part of the gardens' impressive flora collection is a vast number of diverse indigenous and exotic plant species. The bulk of the collection is made up of cycad trees, orchids, bromeliads and palm trees.
The Durban Botanic Gardens is home to over 80 heritage trees, many of which are over 100 years old and therefore have historic value. The gardens boast a lake that is popular for being the site of the Old Mutual ‘Music at The Lake’ events. The gardens also have a tea garden where one can get refreshments and light meals for breakfast and lunch every day of the week and makes for a lovely tranquil break from the flurry of Durban. Another attraction of the gardens is the orchid house which is world-renowned as the first 'naturalistic' orchid display house.
This enchanted institution was first developed as trial grounds for agricultural crops with economic value such as tea, coffee, sugar cane and pineapples. The gardens have progressed to become part of a network of international botanic gardens that focus on the core areas of biodiversity, education, heritage, horticulture excellence, research and green innovation.

Loved it. Old world charm, close to the beach but when you are in Berea it feels like a different country. We went for walks (felt very safe) visited the local coffee shops and restaurants. Loved our stay!
