Accommodation near Free State Stadium - 2
The Free State Stadium started out life in 1995, when it was built in anticipation of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, a milestone for the new South Africa which is still remembered fondly. For many years it was known as Vodacom Park, thanks to a lucrative advertising deal. However, its name was changed, like many of South Africa’s stadiums, when the FIFA World Cup came to town. After all, FIFA’s strict guidelines stipulate that no advertising other than that of FIFA and its sponsors can be on show during the event.
In case you hadn’t already guessed, the Free State Stadium is used primarily for rugby union and association football. It is home to the Cheetah’s rugby team (known as the Central Cheetahs for Super Rugby competitions and the Free State Cheetahs for Currie Cup games) and the Bloemfontein Celtics football team.
Another thing which should be obvious is the stadium’s location, that is, in Bloemfontein, the capital city of the Free State province in South Africa. It is located in a sporting complex which also accommodates hockey and cricket fields and an athletics track.
Currently the Free State Stadium has a grass surface and a capacity for 46 000 people. It boasts modern facilities such as new turn styles, electronic scoreboards, powerful floodlights and great media facilities for television, print and radio journalists. All of these upgrades, including the enlargement of the stadium were done around 2008, leading up to the Soccer World Cup.
When the stadium isn’t being used for sports matches, it is sometimes utilised for political rallies, music performances and religious gatherings too.
