The Good Hope Centre is a well know venue in the heart of Cape Town. It hosts numerous events throughout the year, including live music and entertainment, exhibitions, conferences, cultural performances, public talks and sports performances.
The Centre was built in 1976 by renowned structural engineer and architect Pier Luigi Nervi, and is characteristic of 1970's architecture. Its distinctive feature – the domed roof – is the largest example of this structural device in the world.
Inside, it comprises an exhibition hall consisting of an arch with tie-beam on each of the four vertical facades and two diagonal arches supporting two intersecting barrel-like roofs which in turn were constructed from pre-cast concrete triangular coffers with in-situ concrete beams on the edges.
The centre has 4500 square metres of space and a seating capacity of 7000 people.
The city of Cape Town is continually upgrading and mantaining the building, as it is considered an important landmark and an integral part of the landscape of central Cape Town.
