Grand Central Airport is a small, privately-owned air base in Gauteng, South Africa. It covers an area of over 40 hectares in Midrand, a town half way between the cities of Johannesburg and Pretoria.
The airport is open to public air traffic. Because the airport is not especially busy, it is not necessary to get prior permission to land at the airport. It is considered sufficient to just make a radio call before landing. There is however, a fee charged to land an air craft at this facility as well as aircraft and car parking fees. The airport is only suitable for light aircraft and is open 12 hours a day.
The airport has incorporated a modern terminal building, although it does not have customs facilities. There are 5 fixed-base operators on the field that offer repair facilities and maintenance for light aircrafts.
Available at the Grand Central Airport is the option of car rental from 3 different companies: Avis, Budget and Europcar. There are also aircraft charters available from Eskom Aviation and CFA Charters as well as helicopter charters from 7 different companies. There are also 5 flying schools on the base for both fixed-wing air crafts and helicopters. There is a restaurant on site too.
Grand Central Airport was built in 1937 as a club for flying enthusiasts. In 1964 the decision was made to expand it, thus growing it over the years to become a base for commercial and private operators, training schools and maintenance companies. In 1992, the airport saw a revolutionary multi-million rand face-lift allowing it to offer even more facilities to its patrons.
