Killarney
Race Track, also referred to as Killarney
Race Circuit, is a motor racing
complex in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, South Africa, Tableview to be
precise. It is located about 30 kilometres from the Cape Town city centre.
The race
track was designed by Edgar Hoal,
who was a race car driver and leading roads engineer and Killarney was first
put to the driving test in 1949. It is a member
of the Western Province Motor Club and celebrated its 50th
anniversary in 1999. Killarney is described
as a classic track that is ideal for novices but also for a daring challenge
for those willing to shoot off at rocket speeds.
The track
has developed and evolved over the years to cater for different types of racing. From motocross to karting, stock cars, supermotard, drag
racing and formula one racing. In December of 1960, Killarney hosted the
first international Formula One race in South Africa, the Cape Grand Prix
Formula One race.
The complex
offers short-circuit racing in addition
to the 3,2 kilometre main circuit track. Bomas are available for both long
term and short term per-race hire. There is a VIP room that offers a birds-eye view of the entire track during
the races which is equipped with lunch
service and a full bar. The track can also be hired out for private use.
The
Killarney Race Track clubhouse has 3
fully stocked bars, one downstairs and 2 upstairs, one of which is
non-smoking. There are conferencing
facilities, a braai area and a kitchen that caters for private events as
well as a pub restaurant that caters
for all meals of the day.
