Edgemead provides visitors the best of both worlds; it exists as the quintessential suburbia with its green pastures and wide-open spaces and playgrounds for children, yet is in close proximity to the retail heart of Cape Town.
Situated a mere 20 minutes from Cape Town central, Edgemead lies at the foot of the Tygerberg Hills. While stressed-out corporates escape the Mother City for a more tranquil way of life, the town's close proximity to the Durbanville Wine Route allows residents to embark on wine tasting expeditions on the weekends.
The beginnings of Edgemead as a residential suburb are humble. During the 1970's, affordable housing became available to first-time buyers and potential homeowners on a budget. Not only was its affordability a major attraction, but the stipulated title deeds ensured that the area was safe, environmentally friendly and overall, a pleasant area to start a family. This was done by ensuring that no trees were cut down without permission (and a good enough reason) and advertising was limited to restrict over-commercialisation.
While families bask in the verdant greenery, those who tire from the continuous slow-paced life can find some fun and entertainment at Grandwest Casino and Entertainment World. This world-class casino does not only cater to the ways of gambling fanatics, but also provides a host of family-orientated activities and dining experiences. Drop your kid off at the comprehensive children's entertainment area or allow them to show off their skating abilities at the Olympic-sized ice rink. If you’re looking for a bit to eat in between skating or gambling, there are numerous top-quality restaurants scattered around the casino.
If you're looking to spend a couple of days in Edgemead, there are some lovely self-catering establishments in the area.
