Kings Park Stadium is a sporting venue with a total capacity of 55 000. It was constructed in 1891 and now forms part of the larger Kings Park Sporting Precinct, of which the Moses Mabhida Stadium is also a part. In fact, Kings Park is only 200 metres from the new stadium. Kings Park Stadium is home to the Natal Sharks rugby team, hosting their home games and also occasionally hosts soccer matches between Durban-based Premier Soccer League teams and their opponents.
The Kings Park Sporting Precinct and, naturally Kings Park Stadium itself, are located near Durban’s central business district. You will find the stadium just south of the Umgeni River and a stone’s throw from Durban Beach. Its location means that finding convenient Durban accommodation for the Kings Park Stadium is very simple!
During the course of its life, the stadium has had numerous suffixes and prefixes added to its name for sponsorship reasons. It has been known as the Absa Kings Park Stadium, for example, and currently its official name is Growthpoint Kings Park Stadium, as it is sponsored by the property investment holdings company.
Apart from numerous names, the stadium has seen a number of matches including some 1995 Rugby World Cup matches (the year in which South Africa won its first Rugby World Cup) and numerous live acts such as Bon Jovi and Tina Turner.
These days, the north-south orientated grass field mainly plays host to rugby matches during the season (mid-April to August). Included in the total capacity are 360 private suites, ranging from 18 to 45 seats each, dotted across the stadium. There is also a memorabilia shop known as ‘The Sharks Cage’, which sells Sharks team merchandise and Springboks merchandise.
