Accommodation near Knysna Elephant Park

The Knysna Elephant Park is a uniqueestablishment located just outside of Knysna and Plettenberg Bay on the Western Cape's famous Garden Route. The park is convenientlylocated just 1 kilometre off the N2freeway and boasts numerous facilities. The main draw card of course, isthe elephants themselves.

The park was established in 1994 by a husband and wife team with big hearts and a fascination with the idea of the long-lost Knysna forest elephants. Their small herd started with Harry and Sally, at the time young elephants who managed to escape the Kruger National Park's culling programme. Since then the population at the park has grown steadily and the total number of elephant charges in the park's care is 9.

Each elephant there has a different story to tell and of a different age, because the Knysna Elephant Park is, at its heart, an elephant orphanage. Some have been rescued from translocation efforts gone wrong while others have lost their parents due to hunting expeditions. At the park though they are all given a new lease on life and roam freely across adesignated area.

Visiting the Knysna Elephant Park gives you the opportunity to get up close and personal with these majestic creatures and there are a range of experiences to choose from. You can simply visit them, interacting with them by touching them and feeding them, or you can go a step further by doing a short walk with them or even riding them. The walk and the ride are an hour and halflong and include snacks and a drink.

The Knysna Elephant Park also contributes to the conservation of these creatures by contributing to research studies and educating the public about their plight. Visiting is an entirely worthwhile thing to do and just before you leave you can pop into the curio shop for a souvenir or stay for a meal at the restaurant.

Plettenberg Bay Reviews

Plettenberg Bay
The beach is beautiful and clean. There are lots of activities, i.e. boat excursions, etc. to take part in, as well as many restaurants. On the way to Knysna or to Nature's Valley, which are either side of Plett, we came across many more activities such as horse riding and the Knysna Elephant Park. There is such a variety of things to do to keep busy and the Robberg hikes are a big hit too. There are also farm stalls next to the main road in both directions. Such a worthwhile place to visit!

Plettenberg Bay
Great little town with plenty of options in terms of dining and entertainment. Most restaurants were ok but one served me off calamari which was the weirdest thing to me with Plett being a coastal town. Street kids are a bit of a nuisance when they see your car registration isn't from Plett itself. Service is generally ok but I had an instance where a waitress was rude by making snide comments about me to a colleague and she assumed I didn't speak or understand afrikaans so went on to make the comments in front of me. I left it at that and thought that oneday someone would give her a go.
