A 30 minute drive from the city of Cape Town is the Kommetjie Beach, with white sands and true blue sea water. Set in the idyllic little beach town of Kommetjie, where the air is fresh and the lifestyle is super laid-back.
While the beach parking lot is always populated with a few cars, usually surfers’ vehicles, Kommetjie Beach really comes into its own over the weekends. This is when locals as well as people from further afield stop by to enjoy the ambience. You will see a range of people enjoying the beach, from older couples with dogs to young families with small children.
There is an endless stream of surfers of all ages moving across the beach between the surf and the showers, and never-ending opportunities for people-watching. In summer the beach is a great community hang-out and you’ll notice many impromptu conversations happen between friendly locals. If solace is what you’re after though, a short walk down the beach, away from the main drag and you will find you have the beach almost to yourself. Walking in a northerly direction, towards neighbouring Noordhoek Beach, you will be able to see Chapman’s Peak and Hout Bay in the distance. Upon your return you’ll notice the Kommetjie lighthouse and the point.
The entrance to the beach is located on the far south end of the beach, where there are outdoor showers and an ablution block. This is the hub of the beach’s activity. The area surrounding the beach is largely residential but there is a restaurant or two nearby.
