Accommodation near Kuruman (Johan Pienaar) Airport
Johan Pienaar Airport is situated just outside of Kuruman in the Northern Cape province of South Africa. The town, which is on the border with the North West province, has a small population (around 13 000) and the airport is small to match it. The Kuruman airport operates with a single runway which is 1700 metres by 15 metres and 1336 metres above sea level.
Owing to the small size of the town and its lack of reputation as a major tourist hub, the Kuruman Airport is not very busy. The scheduled flights are few and far between and then they usually carry business people visiting the mines. Larger airports are located in Johannesburg (Gauteng) and Bloemfontein (Free State).
Kuruman is situated just outside of the Kalahari National Park, a popular self-drive destination among South Africans. The region is dry with a couple of small shrubs dotted about. The town however is an oasis, thanks to a fresh water spring which provides 20 million litres of water to the town every day. The spring is known as 'The Eye of Kuruman', 'Die Oog' or 'Gasegonyana'.
Some people think of the spring as a 'fountain of Christianity', as it was in Kuruman that Robert Moffat established his missionary in 1821 and became the first person to translate the bible into seTswana. In 1841 David Livingstone showed up in Kuruman to start his missionary career.
The Kalahari Meerkat Project (made famous by the television program 'Meerkat Manor') is based just outside of Kuruman.
The area around Kuruman is mined for iron ore, manganese, blue asbestos and tiger's eye, so it is probable that much of the airport's traffic is related to this industry.

Kuruman Reviews
Kuruman
The Moffatt Museum was clean and well sign posted. There was no person there to either guide or answer questions which was disappointing. Kuruman itself is not great - we found it grubby and dirty.

Kuruman
This is a place I would like to visit again in future. I understood that history was made there when the bible was translated into vernacular/setswana.

It is a beautiful town.
Full of potholes, which annoyed me because I could not avoid it.

A very nice Wimpy with friendly and helpful people, but otherwise very dusty and lots of litter. The Kalahari Hide was an Oasis in the the Red Dusty Dessert.

We visited Kuruman expressly to experience "Die Oog" which we did and were suitably impressed.

Kuruman
It is a much better place than I imagined. I found more restaurants than I would imagine a small town to have.

A regular stop over for us while travelling to and from the Kgalagadi. A true oasis in the Green Kalahari.
