Lagoon Beach is a quiet bay located just 7-kilometers from the centre of Cape Town. It is popular among holidaymakers who wish to escape the crowds during the season, but don’t want to venture too far from the heart of the Mother City.
With views of Table Mountain, Lion’s Head, and Robben Island from a distance, Lagoon Beach is a vantage point for photographers looking to take pictures of the landmarks. Photographic opportunities are heightened during summer when the sun sets over Lion’s Head, illuminating the mountain in a golden light.
Lagoon Beach is more suited for walking and beach-based activities than swimming. Due to the icy-cold Benguela waters combined with a choppy current, bathing is not recommended.
Woodridge Island is in driving range of Lagoon Beach. While considered nondescript by some, visitors who wish to explore the stretch of land can visit the towering red-and-white lighthouse, or walk along a wooden bridge which takes you across the lagoon.
While the beach is ideal for lazy afternoons of reading, basking in the sun and making sandcastles, it is close to some of Cape Town’s primary tourist attractions. Simply hop on a MyCiti bus – the stop is located just off the beach – and make your way to the CBD for an exciting day in the city. Take a walk through Company’s Garden and enjoy a cup of coffee and slice of cake in the tea area, learn more about Cape Town and South African history at the Iziko Museums, and enjoy a meal at one of the many fine bistros, eateries, and cafes.
The area that surrounds Lagoon Beach is a good base for vino-lovers as it’s close to the start of the Durbanville Wine Route. The valley boasts 12 wineries which produce a wide variety of wine, and restaurants offering great selections of gourmet cuisine.
