Livingstone Hospital is one of the public hospitals in the city of Port Elizabeth, in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The hospital is part of the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex and is located north west of Port Elizabeth’s central business district. It is in the suburb of Korsten, which lies just to the east of the N2 highway.
Port Elizabeth’s Livingstone Hospital is a district hospital, a status which has certain implications for the institution. In South Africa, a district hospital has 3 primary functions in the community. These are to provide support, in the form of clinical and public health expertise, to health workers (doctors and nurses) in clinics and community health centres. They are also responsible for providing first level hospital care to patients, and finally, a district hospital is responsible for being a place where patients are referred to from clinics and community health care centres and in turn for referring patients to better equipped hospitals when their condition is beyond the capacity of the district hospital.
There is an emergency/casualty ward at the hospital as well as departments for obstetrics and gynaecology, maternity, paediatrics, and an outpatient ward for quick, uncomplicated procedures which can be completed within a day. Services offered include surgical and medical procedures, post-trauma counselling, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, X-rays, oral health care, laboratory services. There is also an anti-retroviral clinic which provides treatment and support to HIV positive patients as well as education about AIDS (a major social problem in the Eastern Cape) for the community.
