The Loftus Versfeld Stadium is located in Pretoria, the administrative capital of South Africa. You will find it in the esteemed suburb of Arcadia, renowned for its historical buildings and site of a number of embassies, the all-important Union Buildings and the President’s residence.
The stadium, as with many, has undergone numerous name changes throughout its life, all related to the sponsor of the minute. Among the sponsors have been Minolta, during which time the stadium was known as Minolta Loftus, and the large private security firm, Securicor, when it was called Securicor Loftus. In 2005, Vodacom took over the naming sponsorship from Securicor and renamed the sports ground the Loftus Versfeld Stadium, the name by which locals have been calling it all along.
Loftus Versfeld Stadium sprung from a humble playing field, which was then known as the Eastern Sports Ground. The field was first utilised as such in 1906 but the concrete stadium structure was only erected in 1923. It was commissioned by the Pretoria City Council and named after a Robert Owen Loftus Versfeld who is touted as the founder of Pretoria’s organised sports scene.
Over the years, the stadium underwent numerous renovations to get it looking as it does today. These renovations have included the addition of bathroom blocks and changing rooms, updated parking areas and great areas to increase the capacity. These days the stadium can comfortably play host 51 767 people.
Generally speaking, the people who make up that capacity come to watch rugby, the sport most commonly associated with the Loftus Versfeld Stadium. However, the stadium did host its fair share of soccer matches during the 2010 FIFA World Cup, something which it still does on the odd occasion. It has also hosted the likes of Robbie Williams, Celine Dion and UB40 for their large outdoor concerts.
