This beach is a beautiful stretch of turquoise seas and creamy white sands. It lies on the False Bay Coast, a few kilometres on from Strand and Sunrise Beaches. The beach is sandwiched between the ocean, the coastal road, Baden Powell Drive, which connects Muizenberg and the N2 freeway, and Khayelitsha and Macassar, two large townships.
The beach offers many kilometres of dog-friendly space, and in the height of summer it comes alive as the local township population flocks to enjoy the sunshine and frolic in the waves.
Macassar Beach is not your hip and happening beach like those on the Atlantic Seaboard, but rather a place with a sometimes eerie sense of the past entwined in it. The abandoned Macassar Beach Pavilion for example, built in 1991, was once the brightly coloured, vibrant heart of the beach, with kiosks and take-away shops neighbouring changing rooms and toilet facilities utilised by the beach’s visitors. Today however the pavilion is deserted, the blue paint, where it hasn’t chipped off, has faded to pastel and there is no evidence of glass in any of the windows.
The pavilion is a favourite place for photographers (although it is important that you explore it with an alert group for safety reasons), as the abandoned building, waterslides and swimming pools cast strange shadows, and much of the area has been eaten up by the advancing sand dunes.
Speaking of sand dunes, dotted around the area you will notice information boards talking about ‘dunes on the move’. These boards are part of efforts by the Macassar Dunes Project, an environmental organisation tasked with protecting the dune eco-system.
The seaside city of Strand is visible from Macassar Beach, and nearby is one of Cape Town’s famous kramats (grave of the Muslim noblemen).
