Accommodation near Magersfontein Monument

The Magersfontein Monument exists to commemorate one of the most notorious battles of the second Anglo-Boer War. The bloody battle took place in the inhospitable landscape a few kilometres outside of Kimberley in the Northern Cape and is the stuff of novels, gripping, bloody novels in particular. As you might expect, the Magersfontein Monument is next to the original battlefield, just outside Kimberley.

In 1899, when the battle occurred, the Boers had surrounded the coveted diamond-mining settlement of Kimberley, leaving the British occupants of the town without access to supplies, and no doubt extremely nervous about their fate. There was, as a result, huge pressure on the British forces to win back the territory.

Unperturbed, the British advanced towards Kimberley with the intention of attacking the Boers at day-break, taking them by surprise and beating the opposition with their superior artillery. However, on the fateful morning, the British discovered that the Boers weren't hiding in the surrounding hills but hidden in trenches at their bases. Thus it was the Boers who had the element of surprise on their side. As a result, the British were struck down despite their fancy guns and armour, and those who weren't shot were left to perish, sunburnt and dehydrated in the heat of the Northern Cape's sun.

A visit to the monument is best done in conjunction with a tour of the battlefields. An experienced guide will explain the history of the battle to you and then walk the battlefield, pointing out where different events occurred at which point, thus bringing the history of the Magersfontein Battle to life.

Kimberley was great and loved that we could stay out of the city in such a lovely place. Big Hole was amazing.

Kimberley
My last visit to Kimberly was 1989. The "Big Hole" viewing has improved no end with the new Diamond Big Hole museum and the old street which is also lit at night giving a very authentic feel to that era of time. I suggest a two day stay will cover the prominent sights including the McGregor museum and the Magersfontein Battle fields.
