Accommodation near Mokala National Park

Mokala National Park is the latest addition to the SANParks' (South African National Parks) stable of game and nature reserves. It is located just outside Kimberley in the Northern Cape of South Africa. Seventy kilometres to the west of the city, you'll find this vast reserve with its distinctive vegetation.

The national park, being located in the Northern Cape as it is, experiences an arid climate - low rainfall with hot days and cool nights. However despite the lack of water, the park boasts a wide variety of vegetation types, thanks to its status as a transition zone where the Karoo biome meets the Kalahari biome. This variety of vegetation in turn supports a broad spectrum of other species.

Entering the park, you will be taken with its distinct feeling of isolation, thanks to the dolerite hills (or koppies, as they're known in Afrikaans) which dot the landscape, leaving you feeling very small. The incredible thing about this landscape though, is that there comes a point when you leave the hillocks behind and spread out before you are flat, sandy plains.

On these plains and in the hills too, you'll find a number of interesting species, from birds like the white backed vulture, and mammals like the rare tsessebe, roan antelope and black wildebeest. The Mokala National Park is also home to many indigenous plant species. A definitive species in the park is the camel thorn tree, from which the park gets its name - Mokala is the Setswana name for the plant. The camel thorn tree is an important for both humans, who use its gum for medicinal purposes among others, and other animals.

Kimberley Reviews

It was my first time in Kimberley and I found it to be peaceful, friendly and no rush. The places of interest are accessible but roadsigns not informative enough

Kimberley is a city with a great historical attraction
- Koos Barkhuizen

Kimberley was great and loved that we could stay out of the city in such a lovely place. Big Hole was amazing.
- Jo Goddard

My last visit to Kimberly was 1989. The "Big Hole" viewing has improved no end with the new Diamond Big Hole museum and the old street which is also lit at night giving a very authentic feel to that era of time. I suggest a two day stay will cover the prominent sights including the McGregor museum and the Magersfontein Battle fields.
