The Mokolo Dam Nature Reserve is a picturesque protected area in the heart of Limpopo province. The 4600 hectare reserve is only 3 hours from Johannesburg, and almost as close to Pretoria, and yet sitting on the dam’s banks, surrounded by open savannah and the towering Waterberg Mountains, you couldn’t feel further from the city if you tried. The closest town to the reserve is the tiny coal-mining town Lephalale, with a population which hovers below 3000.
To fill you in somewhat, the Mokolo Dam is a rock fill dam, fed by the mighty Mokolo River. The dam itself is the largest in the Limpopo province and when the water levels reach the high-water mark, the dam takes up most of the space within the reserve’s boundary. The abundance of water and the combination of soetveld (sweet grass) and suurveld (sour grass) means that the reserve is a popular haven for many species of antelope and other herbivores. It is also a bird paradise, boasting a hefty variety of waders and other species.
The Mokolo Dam Nature Reserve is open to day visitors and is a popular spot to spend a lazy day picnicking and spotting birds. For the more active, the dam is the perfect place to get down to some water-sports, with wake-boarding and water-skiing being ever-popular options.
Fishing is another popular past-time in the reserve, with previous reports suggesting bass catches of up to 4 kilograms!
Finally, the ever-present birds, the open grassland and the varying shadows and shapes cast by the magnificent Waterberg repeatedly catch the eye of keen photographers, earning the Mokolo Dam Nature Reserve an impressive reputation amongst photographers, amateur and professional alike.
