Pollak Park Golf Club is a friendly, efficient club in the mining town of Springs, on Gauteng’s East Rand. The town is a major gold mining centre in the province and is located 50 kilometres east of Johannesburg and 72 kilometres south east of Pretoria.
The course was designed in 1921 by Major Pollak, then a serious funder of the Anglo American Corporation. After originally being named the ‘Springs Mines and West Springs Golf Club’, it was renamed Pollak Park in honour of the major. It was also originally a 9-hole course but was later extended to the full 18 holes it boasts today.
The course is a parkland-style green: mostly flat with trees skirting the edges and the odd water feature or rut to add a bit of a challenge to the game. Many golfers speak very highly of the Pollak Park course and club, especially post 2005 when it underwent conditioning, and it is often touted as one of the premium courses on the East Rand.
Another reason the people rave about the club is that the services are very good and the golfing community and staff at the club are very welcoming, making anyone feel at home there. The club is closed on Mondays but visitors are welcome any other day of the week.
The facilities at the Pollak Park Golf Club include practise facilities: a putting green and driving range, a bar and restaurant, a pro-shop, lessons and gear rental, from golf carts to clubs. There are also conference facilities.
While the club is generally relaxed, hey do request that you adhere to the dress code: smart casual in the bar and clubhouse, and proper golfing attire on the course and practise greens. Only soft-spike shoes are allowed.
