The Pretoria National Botanical Garden is
located in the east of Pretoria in a suburb known as Brummeria. The gardens
have a long history behind them which only serves to enhance their offering to
the public.
Established in 1946, the 76 hectare gardens
were developed as resource for researchers at the time. Today, while there is
slightly less emphasis on research, mainly because the gardens are now in part
a tourism business, they are still a member of the South African National
Biodiversity Institute (SANBI), and are home to the National Herbarium, a
Biodiversity Centre and an Environmental Education Centre.
The plants in the gardens are divided into
what can best be described as ‘family groups’. These include a succulent
garden, a cycad garden, a section for useful plants and one for medicinal
plants, among others. There is also a wetland area, an arboretum and natural
grasslands, all of which constitute the ‘wilder’ side of the garden. In between
the plants beds are rolling stretches of grass, dotted with large old trees
providing shade. There are also walkways in between the various gardens which
patrons can follow in order to get up close and personal with the various plant
types without damaging them.
Apart from the abundant plant life, one of
the natural features which define the Pretoria National Botanical Garden is the
quartzite ridge which roughly divides the area into a warmer, sun-facing side
and cooler south facing side. The dassie trail is one of the footpaths which
traverses the iconic ridge.
The Pretoria National Botanical Garden is a
great place to have picnic throughout the year, thanks to the shady lawns, but
if your style is less rustic, there is also a tea garden, restaurant and
function venue.
