Wonderboom Airport is a small national airport in Pretoria, named after the original farm on which it was built. It started out as a single airstrip, opened to air traffic in 1937 and was built 15 kilometres from Pretoria’s centre. The airport has been through many phases during the course of its life, leaving it with a rich history.
The airport was taken over by the South African Department of Defence during World War 2 and became a training ground for Royal Air Force and South African Air Force pilots. It was chosen for this purpose because it was situated far from the actual war zone. Furthermore, it did and still does, provide perfect weather conditions.
After the war, numerous extensions were added to the airport, and in 1965 it underwent its most significant facelift. In 1982 the first Boeing 747 landed at the airport and Wonderboom hasn’t looked back since.
During the 1980’s Wonderboom Airport became popular with business people owing to its fine conferencing facilities. It also became the home of the largest parachuting club in South Africa. These two things still hold true today.
While Wonderboom Airport only offers local flights, there are many other services available. These sevices include chartered flights, tour operators, workshops servicing and refurbishing helicopters and aeroplanes, a pilot shop, an air school and a parachuting school.
For passengers there is secure parking, restaurant and bar facilities, car hire and accommodation nearby. This is all within a short distance of central Pretoria.
