The Prince George Circuit, also known as the East London Grand Prix Circuit is a motor racing track located in East London. The circuit has a long history of hosting numerous regional, national and international racing events.
During the early 1930’s, the then motor editor of the Daily Dispatch proposed that the town host their first racing event on the newly constructed Marine Drive. The response to his idea was so popular that entries from motor enthusiasts from around the globe began to pour in. Due to its worldwide acclaim, the event forever became known as the South African Grand Prix.
The inaugural race of the South African Grand Prix took place in December 1934 – a date that will forever be cemented in East London history –where eighteen drivers from South Africa, America, and Great Britain battled out six laps on the 24.46-kilometer circuit. The race was won by Whitney Straight, an American billionaire sportsman, who averaged a speed of 244-kilometers per hour in his gleaming Maserati.
The racing continued from 1936 to 1939, before the route of the circuit was shortened to 17.7-kilometers in order to surpass the more dangerous areas of West Bank. In 1959, the course was again changed as it was affected by the newly constructed East London Airport. Drivers would race along East London’s Esplanade for six Grand Prix – from the years 1960 to 1966. In 1967, the international race was moved to Kyalami in Gauteng as the Prince George Circuit was deemed too small for Formula One Cars.
Today, Prince George Circuit is a high-speed long circuit which hosts motor and motorcycle road racing of all calibers, including go-karting, supermoto, drifting, and drag.
