The Rand Airport is a relatively small airport located in Germiston, in the East Rand of Johannesburg. It was built in the 1920’s and once operated as Johannesburg’s main airport. It was once even the busiest airport in the Southern Hemisphere.
Pre-World War 2 it held pride of place as the headquarters of South African Airways (SAA – South Africa’s national air carrier), but shortly after the Palmietfontein Airport usurped Rand Airport as the official Johannesburg airport in the 1940’s, SAA moved its operations there instead. Despite the exodus of SAA, Rand Airport remained a busy airport because of the large number of ex-air force pilots.
The conditions at Rand Airport also had a lot to do with the airport’s dwindling trade. The airport is notorious for its hot, high-altitude conditions (it lies at an altitude of 1600 metres) and short runways. In many cases, aircrafts’ performance is compromised under these conditions, and there have been a number of accidents for this very reason. As a result, many private charter companies relocated to Lanseria Airport, especially since Rand Airport is in an urban area where there is no space for the expansion of the runways.
Despite an exodus of many flight companies, Rand Airport is still a busy little airport, which is used as a base for many charter companies, flying schools and aircraft maintenance organisations. The airport also provides a popular space for filmmakers who use the hangars for their film sets.
