The
Rietvlei Nature Reserve is located in
Pretoria, 18 kilometres from the city centre and 38 kilometres (30 minutes)
from OR Tambo International Airport.
It was
proclaimed a nature reserve in 1948 and is home to the Rietvlei Dam, which provides Pretoria
with 15 percent of its water supply. The dam offers a number of
recreational activity options like boating,
which is a popular activity. There is a yacht
club housed on the north western shore of the dam. Fishing at the dam is also allowed.
This 3 800 hectare reserve has the capacity
to support just over 2 000 heads of game and currently supports approximately 1 600 animals. Among the
inhabitants of the nature reserve are blesbok, black wildebeest, Burchell's
zebras, eland, grey duiker, mountain reedbuck, reedbuck, springbok, and
steenbok.
The reserve
has 60 kilometres of tarred road
that lead one on a 'close-up' tour, which grants you closer sightings of the
animals seen on the open plains. There is also an opportunity to see elusive nocturnal species on a guided night tour
where aardwolf, black-backed jackal, bush pig, brown hyena, porcupine and
spring hare species can be spotted. The tour ends at the Rietvlei Nature Reserve lapa where you can have a memorable braai.
Additionally,
there are guided hiking and horse tours
where one can spot animals like the cheetah, buffalo, leopard and white
rhinoceros too.
The Marais Dam picnic area is a great place
to sit and relax on the reserve. Here one will find braai facilities with big shady spots to sit, as well a bird hide that will make your picnic
all the more interesting with viewings of hippopotamus and water fowl.
