Accommodation near Robberg Nature Reserve - 10
The Robberg Nature Reserve is a stunningly picturesque
location on the beautiful Garden Route. It is also yet another must-see
attraction near Plettenberg Bay, a small seaside resort town which is simply
brimming with opportunities to get close to nature. Of all the must-see
attractions in the area though, the Robberg Nature Reserve is the least
controlled experience you will find – when you’re in the reserve, it’s just
you, the land and all its wonderful surprises.
The Robberg Nature Reserve is run by Cape Nature, the
Western Cape’s environmental body which oversees all public reserves. This
particular reserve though, is special as it is both a national park, and a
national monument. Why? You ask…
Apart from being home to the rare blue duiker – the Western
Cape’s smallest antelope, and the rare climbing-falling dunes, never mind the
various vulnerable fish, the rocks found there date back to 120 million years
ago to the break-up of Gondwanaland. There is also evidence within the reserve’s
caves of middle and later stone-age inhabitants. Another point of interest
within the reserve is the Cape Seal Lighthouse, which, at 146 meters above sea
level, is the highest navigational light on the South African coastline.
In addition to protecting plenty of bird species and rare
land species, the reserve extends 18 kilometres into the ocean, where you will
find extraordinary creatures such as the unique sex-changing Roman fish.
Activities offered within the reserve include hiking,
picnicking, swimming, whale and dolphin watching, and bird watching. And if you
feel that a day-trip is not going to satisfy you, you can spend a night or 2 at
the rustic self-catering cottage within the reserve.
All of this is found just 8 kilometres south of Plettenberg
Bay, and is a very affordable family jaunt – R40 entry for adults and R20 for
children…

Plettenberg Bay! I never knew a town could feel so much like holiday. The shops, scenery and special places like Robberg - all wow. This is on top of my list for a revisit. Quite close to some of my great life experiences like Birds of Eden, Monkeyland and others. Don't ever just pass by.
