Accommodation near Robberg Nature Reserve

The Robberg Nature Reserve is a stunningly picturesque location on the beautiful Garden Route. It is also yet another must-see attraction near Plettenberg Bay, a small seaside resort town which is simply brimming with opportunities to get close to nature. Of all the must-see attractions in the area though, the Robberg Nature Reserve is the least controlled experience you will find - when you're in the reserve, it's just you, the land and all its wonderful surprises.

The Robberg Nature Reserve is run by Cape Nature, the Western Cape's environmental body which oversees all public reserves. This particular reserve though, is special as it is both a national park, and a national monument. Why? You ask.

Apart from being home to the rare blue duiker - the Western Cape's smallest antelope, and the rare climbing-falling dunes, never mind the various vulnerable fish, the rocks found there date back to 120 million years ago to the break-up of Gondwanaland. There is also evidence within the reserve's caves of middle and later stone-age inhabitants. Another point of interest within the reserve is the Cape Seal Lighthouse, which, at 146 meters above sea level, is the highest navigational light on the South African coastline.

In addition to protecting plenty of bird species and rare land species, the reserve extends 18 kilometres into the ocean, where you will find extraordinary creatures such as the unique sex-changing Roman fish.

Activities offered within the reserve include hiking, picnicking, swimming, whale and dolphin watching, and bird watching. And if you feel that a day-trip is not going to satisfy you, you can spend a night or 2 at the rustic self-catering cottage within the reserve.

All of this is found just 8 kilometres south of Plettenberg Bay, and is a very affordable family jaunt - R40 entry for adults and R20 for children.

Plettenberg Bay Reviews

Plettenberg Bay
Love Plett
- Karel De Jager

Plettenberg Bay
The beach is beautiful and clean. There are lots of activities, i.e. boat excursions, etc. to take part in, as well as many restaurants. On the way to Knysna or to Nature's Valley, which are either side of Plett, we came across many more activities such as horse riding and the Knysna Elephant Park. There is such a variety of things to do to keep busy and the Robberg hikes are a big hit too. There are also farm stalls next to the main road in both directions. Such a worthwhile place to visit!

Plettenberg Bay
Great little town with plenty of options in terms of dining and entertainment. Most restaurants were ok but one served me off calamari which was the weirdest thing to me with Plett being a coastal town. Street kids are a bit of a nuisance when they see your car registration isn't from Plett itself. Service is generally ok but I had an instance where a waitress was rude by making snide comments about me to a colleague and she assumed I didn't speak or understand afrikaans so went on to make the comments in front of me. I left it at that and thought that oneday someone would give her a go.
