Rock Raceway began as the vision of Tim Stephens, a self-proclaimed petrol head who has dedicated most of his life toward building a motorsport complex in the East Rand. In 2005, this pipe dream was turned into a reality, when the then defunct venue received a face-lift. The oval track already in place was re-tarred, and construction on the RC and Motor Cross Circuits began.
Today, Rock Raceway is the chosen venue for enthusiasts looking to race around the circuits. One of the reasons why the raceway has become popular amongst enthusiasts is due to it being the first multi-purpose track in Africa, focussing predominantly on drifting. For those who aren't in the know, drifting is a unique form of drag racing which sees participants intentionally oversteering, causing a loss of traction in the rear wheels or all of the tires, while still maintaining control over their vehicles. If drifting isn’t your motorsport of choice, the circuit boasts various other racing options, including karting, Pocket Bikes, Street Drags and Hot Rods.
While the venue promises an exciting day at the track, safety is of the utmost importance. To minimize the harm and injury of the racers, Rock Raceway abides with the rules and regulations of WOMZA (World of Motorsport ZA). Numerous security measures and safety features have been adopted, allowing drivers to exercise their chosen motor sport knowing that sound structures are in place for the protection of the drivers.
While Rock Raceway is geared toward friendly racing among amateurs, the venue is frequented by international and national pros who partake in high-speed races, competing against one another for numerous titles and top prizes.
While predominantly focused on racing, the destination also lends itself to outdoor exhibits and car shows for those who have retired from motorsports.
