Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve is situated to the southeast of Pretoria, in a region called Dinokeng. Dinokeng has been jauntily described to tourists as the place to visit if you’re wishing to experience ‘Africa in one day’. Spanning over 20 000 hectares in size, Dinokeng is an area rich in public and private reserves, sanctuaries and wooded hideaways. It also includes the popular destination, Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve.
What started as a simple irrigation dam evolved into the fully-fledged nature reserve that it is today. The area is popular amongst fishermen due to its abundance of Bass and Carp. Roodeplaat, with its lush vegetation, attracts many varieties of bird to the area. Birders should keep their eyes peeled for the shy away Finfoot, or be amused by the Jacanas who are seen precariously balancing on lily pads in the dam.
Roodeplaat Dam Nature Reserve is ideal for day trips because of its close proximity to Pretoria. Take the family out for a picnic, game drive or a hike to escape the daily stresses of city living. Upon your visit to the reserve, you’ll see herds upon herds of Zebras, Warthogs, and Impala. For rarer sightings, take an early morning or evening drive for the chance to spot the Black-Backed Jackal.
The reserve is also ideal for hiking. Hiking enthusiasts can walk some 7km’s around the dam’s perimeter. During the hike, you’ll not only be enthralled by the tranquil setting, but you’ll be able to spot birds at a close range at the two hides. For that relaxed Sunday afternoon at the dam, picnickers can nibble on treats under the shade of the trees by the designated picnic area.
