The South African Jewish Museum is located in Cape Town, South Africa on Hatfield Street in Gardens. This Museum focuses on the history of the South African Jewish people, the Jewish religion and culture as well as the role of the Jewish community in the struggle for freedom against the Apartheid government.
The museum has an entrance through the Company Gardens that is framed beautifully by an arch way created by the branches of the surrounding trees.
The museum is a stop on the City Sightseeing red bus route, which takes tourists to various pertinent sights around the Cape Peninsula. City Sightseeing patrons are granted free entrance to the museum upon displaying their bus passes at the reception. The museum is open from Sunday to Thursday from 10am- 5pm and on Fridays from 10am-2pm and closed on Saturdays as Friday and Saturday are the Jewish Sabbath.
The Nelson Mandela Auditorium within the museum seats 100 people and is equipped with the latest technology. It is used for small conferences, movie screenings, lectures and workshops.
On offer at the museum is a fully comprehensive audio tour that leads the museum patron through 21 significant parts of the museum. These audio tours include annotations on the history of South Africa and the different pertinent personalities, so that patrons might have a full understanding of the exhibits.
One of the main attractions in the museum is the Hidden Treasures of Japanese Art: The Isaac Kaplan Collection. This collection consists of miniature works of Japanese art and is offered with an audio guide that elaborates on the different works on display, the lives of the various artists and the materials they worked with.
