Accommodation near Table Mountain National Park

Table Mountain National Park was originally named ‘Hoerikwaggo’, which means ‘mountain of the sea’ in the Khoisan language. It received this name due to the fact that it is a small strip of land surrounded by sprawling mountains ranges, the Atlantic Ocean and the warmer waters of False Bay.

Having been established in 1998, the reserve falls under the management of SANParks. What makes it different to the other 21 parks that fall under its jurisdiction is the unique location of Table Mountain National Park. The park stretches for 60kms along the Peninsula mountain chain to Cape Point and all the way through to Signal Hill. What makes the park all the more remarkable is that boasts extraordinarily unique flora and diverse habitats. This may be surprising considering that the park is enveloped by the city of Cape Town and fragmented by the ongoing urban development.

Table Mountain National Park comprises of two world-renowned landmarks, that of Table Mountain and the Cape of Good Hope. Following the construction of a steel cableway in the early 1900’s, over 16 million people have taken the trip up to the tops of the majestic Table Mountain. Here, one has the opportunity to marvel at the wraparound views of the cityscape and the azure Atlantic Ocean from a distance. A visit to Cape Town would be considered incomplete without visiting the iconic Cape of Good Hope. This landmark has a rich biodiversity and is home to numerous wildlife species - with over 250 recorded birds, antelope, baboons and the Cape Mountain Zebra. It has also, for many years, held great significance for sea-farers en route to far-off lands.

Those who are looking to explore can take one of the many scenic drives through the peninsula, where the winding Chapman’s Peak Drive or ‘Chappies’ as it is referred to by the locals, gives you breathtaking views of the ocean.

Holidaymakers who are looking for a meal with a view can enjoy quality cuisine at the many restaurants scattered in the area. The Rhodes Memorial Tea Garden is located just behind iconic landmark, providing customers with a perfect teatime setting made complete with spectacular sights of the city.
