Accommodation near The Cango Caves

The Cango Caves are a must-see attraction located roughly 29 kilometres from Oudtsoorn in the Klein Karoo. The town is about 600 kilometres from Cape Town.

Surrounded by the striking, arid Karoo landscape, the Cango Caves are just one in a string of intriguing and entertaining attractions, but there is no doubt they are one of the best, and the oldest!

The Cango Caves is the oldest tourist attraction in South Africa, having delighted visitors since the early 1800’s. They are also the first caves in Africa to be protected by environmental legislation. It is now known that the caves have been known to man since the early stone ages, which adds yet another level of intrigue to this already fantastical site.

The caves are characterised by beautiful stalactites and stalagmites which seem to drip from the ceiling of the caves or grow out of the floor giving the appearance of a candle which has melted. The rock formations are surreal and each cave is lit by a series of colourful bulbs which enhance the experience.

There are two tour options available, one being the heritage tour and the other being the adventure tour. Both tours are led by experienced guides who take you through a series of caves with names such as Rainbow Chamber and Van Zyl’s Cave. On the adventure tour an extra section is added to the heritage tour, which takes you deeper into the caves and through tight spaces where leopard crawling is sometimes required.

The Cango Caves complex has a restaurant and curio shop to browse after completing your tour, and there is also an interpretive centre which explains the history and geology of the caves, and an information centre which provides general information about Oudtsoorn and its attractions.

Oudtshoorn
It is very pretty and peaceful. Unfortunately our stay was too short and we could not explore as much as I would have liked. The dirt roads, with the exception of the Montague Pass, were well maintained. I gather there had been rain the previous week so maybe that was why the Montague Pass needed grading.
