Accommodation near The Cradle of Humankind - 5
The Cradle of Humankind is a significant site in South Africa, not only for South Africans, but the entire human race. It is a large area consisting of a complex of limestone caves. Among them are over 3 dozen in which fossils have been found. The most famous among them are the Sterkfontein Caves.
In 1947 Doctor Robert Broom and Doctor John T Robinson unearthed Mrs Ples, a 2.3 million year old hominid fossil, in the Sterkfontein Caves. She was a good complement to the growing collection of fossils and helped to answer some of the palaeontologists’ lingering questions. This area has revealed the largest number of hominid fossils in the world and the collection to date includes some of the oldest, supporting the theory that Africa was indeed the birthplace of modern man. This is where the name, the Cradle of Humankind comes from.
The caves at the Cradle of Humankind are continuously being excavated and new fossils being found. It is one of the oldest, continuous archaeological digs in the world.
To enhance the visitors’ experience of the area, the Maropeng Visitors’ Centre was established not too long ago. In it you will find an interpretation centre which explains the history of the site and what the various finds indicate about our shared history. The name ‘Maropeng’ which means ‘returning to the place of our origin’ in Seswati, also alludes to the theory of humanity’s origins being in Africa.
The Cradle of Humankind is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the Maropeng Visitors’ Centre is a certified Fair Trade Tourism endeavour. The site is located northwest of Johannesburg and can be reached by car from Pretoria or Johannesburg in just under an hour.
