The University of Fort Hare is one of the oldest universities in Southern
Africa. It is located in the Eastern Cape and has 3 campuses, one in Alice, one in Bhisho (the provincial capital) and
one in East London ( the university’s only coastal campus). The university
is historically important in both South Africa and the continent as a whole.
The University of Fort Hare first opened its doors to students in 1916.
At the time it was a unique and extraordinarily progressive institution, being
the only Western-style educational
institution on the continent which provided a universally accepted standard of
education to black people from South Africans and those from across
sub-Saharan Africa.
Many of the university’s alumni went on to play significant roles in
various independence struggles and newly-formed democratic governments. In
1959 however, it was amalgamated into the discriminatory Apartheid system.
Today the University of Fort Hare takes a
proud role in South Africa’s post-Apartheid
public education system. Like any healthy institution it is continually
growing and metamorphosing. The original campus in Alice (about 50 kilometres
west of King William’s Town) has spawned 2 satellite campuses, the most recent
of which being the East London campus, which was taken over from Rhodes University
and serves as the it’s only urban campus. Across theses 3 campuses there is a student body of over 10 000.
The university has 5 faculties: Education, Science and Agriculture, Social Sciences
and Humanities, Management and Commerce and Law. There are a number of research facilities too and numerous outreach programmes.
