Accommodation near The University of Johannesburg - 3
UJ, as the university is known
colloquially, is a public institution and one of South Africa’s largest
comprehensive contact universities. It boasts a student body of 48 000,
which is as racially and ethnically diverse as they come. Furthermore, it has a
large constituent of international students, making it a university which truly
represents the country’s demographics.
The University of Johannesburg, like many
of the country’s other tertiary institutions, emerged in 2005 as a result of
South Africa’s restructuring of the higher education system. It is the result
of a merger between the Rand Afrikaans University, Technikon Witwatersrand and
the Soweto and East Rand campuses of Vista University. Given its various parts,
it’s not difficult to see why the university is indeed so large.
Today the University of Johannesburg
occupies 4 campuses across Johannesburg in Gauteng, 2 in Auckland Park – Bunting
Road and King’s Way – Doornfontein and Soweto. The King’s Way campus is the
largest campus by far with the greatest concentration of students as well as
hosting the administration body and the governance body.
There are 9 faculties in total, including
Computer Science & Software Development; Art, Design & Architecture;
Economic and Financial Sciences; Education; Engineering & the Built
Environment; Health Sciences; Law; Management and Science.
UJ boasts spectacular facilities which
enable students to get the most out of their time at the university. Where
studying is concerned there are well-equipped libraries, lecture halls,
conference venues and laboratories, while there are many other facilities too
which ensure a holistic experience. There are health and wellness clinics,
sporting facilities and of course, the cultural aspect of student life is not
forgotten either with a number of cultural, political and other organisations
playing an active role.

Melville (JHB)
The neighborhood was vibrant, plenty of stores to explore (even a second-hand bookstore) and restaurants. I recommend Cafe Tilt for a a healthy lunch and tea/coffee.
