Accommodation near Tswaing Meteorite Crater & Museum - 2
The Tswaing Meteorite Crater, found 40-kilometres north of Pretoria, is one of four known impact craters in South Africa. It came about after an asteroid hit the earth 20 000 years ago, leaving in its wake, a sizeable hole that is 100-metres high and a kilometre in diameter. Scientists who have studied the geological phenomenon have been left bemused by their findings, which show that its impact is equivalent to the dropping of 100 atomic bombs, despite the meteor being relatively small in size.
Visitors are able to walk along the perimeter of the impact. Those who wish to explore should be aware that it’s hot underfoot, despite the lake found at the epicentre, so be sure to wear a pair of shoes. One of the biggest attractions of the site is the museum. The museum not only provides informative tidbits to visitors but also helps to uplift the community through job creation and income-generating projects.
Aside from the crater, visitors to Tswaing (or ‘salt pan’ as its affectionately referred to by local residents), can explore the Soutpanspruit; an area made up of unique wetlands. These wetlands are home to numerous species of bird as well as small mammals, including otters, genets, brown hyenas and steenbok.
Travel further afield and you’ll reach the National Zoological Gardens, otherwise known as the Pretoria Zoo. It’s South Africa’s largest zoo and has received acclaim for its national status. This status was awarded to the 85-hectare park for its role in the conservation and protection of endangered species. The gardens are home to 3117 animals, which include fish, reptiles’ insects, and the zoo’s star attraction, a sole white tiger.
