Tygerberg Hospital is located in Parow, an area in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town. The hospital, which was officially opened in 1976, is owned and managed by the Western Cape government and is the largest hospital in the province. It is the second largest hospital in South Africa.

Tygerberg is an academic hospital with affiliations to Stellenbosch University, the Cape Peninsula University of Technology and the University of the Western Cape. It is a tertiary hospital which means patients are only admitted by referral from primary and secondary healthcare facilities such as a local clinic or general practitioner.

The hospital, partly thanks to its size, offers an extremely wide range of medical specialties and has a number of designated units, some of them being completely unique to the province. Among the specialist and subspecialist services at the hospital are the Centre for Mental Health, a neonatal intensive care unit, the Tygerbear social work unit, the Poison Information Centre, the Kidney Transplant Unit, the Cochlear Implant Unit, the Tuberculosis Clinical Work Unit and the Adult Burns Unit, which happens to be the only one of its kind in the province. Furthermore, of the over 1300 beds, approximately 308 beds constitute the Tygerberg Children’s Hospital.

The hospital complex is enormous and includes the hospital itself, an admin block, engineering buildings, staff housing, research facilities, a training centre, a bank and a post office, among other things. This all stands testament to the fact that the hospital is well-equipped to act on its mission statement to provide affordable, world-class health care to public and private patients through the use of its resources and to provide excellent educational and research opportunities.
