The Umdoni Park Golf Club is a spectacular
club set along KwaZulu Natal’s South Coast. Situated in the Pennington region, it is 80 kilometres from
the large city of Durban and can be reached within an hour’s drive. The
course is pleasingly challenging and the facilities are impressive to say the
least.
The 18-hole
golf course falls within Umdoni Park, and like the park, is managed by the Umdoni Park Trust. The
park and course were established in 1920
by Sir Frank Reynolds, a successful sugar farmer and Member of Parliament at
the time.
Today, the park is a conservation area which protects an indigenous coastal forest and its many exotic inhabitants, from
birds and lizards to plants and monkeys. In total it covers 210 hectares. By comparison, the golf course is small, with a total length
of less than 6000 metres. Despite its small size, it is still rated highly among the famous KwaZulu Natal
golf courses.
The golf course is picturesque, with the initial 9 holes running along the rocky coastline, and the final 9 holes
stretching inland into the indigenous forest. The setting is such that being out on the course is soul-enriching,
while the undulating contours and changing
elevations of the course require good judgement and thoughtful planning of
your shots.
Before, during or after a round of golf,
you can enjoy a social drink or meal at the beautiful clubhouse. There is a bar, lounge and restaurant, and for a quicker meal, a halfway house too. The clubhouse is
also home to a pro shop, and golf carts and clubs can be rented on-site. There is a putting green and driving range too, to help get you back into the
swing of things if you feel your game is suffering a little.
Aside from playing golf, the forest at
Umdoni Park also offers a network of exquisite
walking trails and one can engage the environmental officer on the various
inhabitants of the area.
