Umkomaas beach
is located in Umkomaas near Amanzimtoti on
KwaZulu Natal’s South Coast. Umkomaas is situated approximately 34 minutes
south of Durban and approximately 45 minutes north of Port Shepstone.
The area is
a popular among those who enjoy being outside in the sunshine, after all, the
South Coast’s sunshine is something to be very proud of! From the beach, or out
on a boat, whales are a common site, as
are dolphins, and it’s easy to while away an hour or two looking out for
them.
This beach
is also popular with recreational
fishermen as it is a rich pool for line fishing. In fact, Umkomaas Beach is
part of the amazing annual phenomenon of the Sardine Run. This is a mass migration where sardines leave the
southern coastal waters and move to the warmer waters of KwaZulu Natal. This
phenomenon sees hundreds of millions of sardines rushing to the shores of
KwaZulu Natal beaches followed by hundreds upon hundreds of dolphins, sharks,
sea birds and various other predatory fish. This event is considered a must-see
because of the sheer spectacle of
seeing so much action at once!
Umkomaas is
best known for being the base camp for
scuba divers from all over the world. This is due to the excellent diving
opportunities presented by the Aliwal Shoal, 5 kilometres from the shore.
Aliwal Shoal is a fossilised volcanic reef with breath-taking underwater landscapes. It
boasts myriad underwater critters like the rock cod and a range of shark species like the ragged tooth shark, hammer head
sharks, Zambezi sharks, copper sharks/bronze whalers, thresher sharks and even
the great white.
Another
exciting way to experience the wonders of the underwater world off the coast of
Umkomaas Beach is by
shark-cage diving,
an experience that is said to be unforgettable and exhilarating.
