Sitting atop the Meintjie Kops in Pretoria, the Union Buildings are certainly a landmark to marvel over. This architectural masterpiece forms the official seat of the South African government and also houses the offices of our country’s president.
The Union Buildings were built by the architect Sir Herbert Baker in the 1920’s and was said to be the greatest achievement of the man’s lifetime. The construction took over three years and required over 1260 workers to finish. Finally, the completed structure was unveiled to the public in 1923, standing 275-metres in length. What makes the Union Building stand out is its unusual shape; it forms a semi-circle with two wings on the outer edges. These wings are said to be symbolic, representing the unification of South Africa’s formerly divided nation.
Apart from the building itself, another attraction to the grounds is the terraced garden. What makes this garden unique is that it is exclusively planted with indigenous flora and fauna. There is also an amphitheatre that can hold a capacity of 900 persons as well as various monuments and statues found on the site.
Following the 10-day mourning period for the late, former state president, Nelson Mandela, a nine-metre-tall bronze statue was unveiled on the Day of Reconciliation in 2013 at the Union Buildings. The statue was designed by the renowned South African sculptors, Andre Prinsloo and Ruhan Janse van Vuuren. What makes the sculpture all the more impressive is that it was constructed in record-breaking time – a project that took mere months to complete.
