The University of South Africa or “Unisa’ was initially founded in 1873. At first, it operated as the examining body for the then ‘University of the Cape of Good Hope’, before changing its name to Unisa in 1916. Recently, Unisa celebrated their 140th anniversary to commemorate their status of being Africa’s longest standing distance education institutions.
One of Unisa’s major campuses is the ‘New Johannesburg Campus’ and is home to a fully-fledged Science hub. In recent years, students have been encouraged to follow Science-related careers, with the university having invested vast resources to expand on Science research and develop top-notch laboratories. Formerly known as ‘Florida’, this thriving facility is located in Roodepoort in the Gauteng Province.
Unisa sees the annual enrolment of approximately 40 000 students worldwide and offers a wide range of internationally accredited study choices - from short courses and certificates to three and four-year degrees. To date, the university is the tertiary institution of choice to over one-third of all South African students. Furthermore, some 130 countries from outside of South Africa have individuals who belong to the Unisa family.
The courses offer a different kind of educational experience, with its main focus on learner-centeredness and flexible learning. The approaches that are used include an array of blended techniques, such as integrated and mixed media as well as coursework that contain a number of modules to ensure continued development.
Not only does the university have an unparalleled spectrum of courses to choose from, but it is said to be the only institution that has, throughout the years, provided opportunities to all students irrespective of race or creed. It is because of these achievements that Unisa have declared themselves ‘an African University in the service of humanity’ and are able to boast an extremely diverse makeup.
