The Wanderers Stadium is the chosen venue for numerous test, one day and first-class cricket matches. The site of the stadium has changed a handful of times through the years, having started its life where the Johannesburg Railway Station is currently located. It found permanent residency in 1950’s and held its first test match in 1956.
The stadium is a prime venue for cricket players and spectators alike, and is located just south of Illovo in Gauteng.
Since its inception in 1856, the stadium has staged some of the most iconic matches in the history of South African cricket. To date, many enthusiasts would tell you that the most memorable cricket they’ve even borne witness to was the final match in a five-day series between South Africa and Australia in 2003. During the game, the Proteas made a ground-breaking 438 runs – beating their opposition by a couple of runs.
One of the reasons why the stadium is such a popular venue for cricket is due to their excellent facilities. To date, the venue has seen upgrades to the value of R60 million. The stadium was given the nickname ‘The Bull Ring’ after four 65-metre floodlights were constructed, allowing for cricket matches to continue into the late afternoons and well into the evening. These floodlights give the venue a grand and imposing appearance. The stadium is also the home ground for the Highveld Lions, a name used by the combined Gauteng and North West first-class cricket teams. The teams participate in the Sunfoil Cricket Series each year as well as the Ramslam T20 Challenge.
