Wingate Park Country Club is an esteemed establishment in the leafy upmarket suburb of Moreleta Park, one of the most south easterly suburbs of Pretoria. Its location means that the country club is close to major transport links such as the N1, N4 and the R21.
Wingate was established back in 1947 and is the brainchild of 5 gentlemen who saw the need for a Jewish club in Pretoria where people from all walks of life would be welcome. They bought a farm on the outskirts of Pretoria and refurbished the main building on the land, turning it into a stately clubhouse. A year later the clubhouse was gutted in a fire. The passionate group found the funds to fix it up again and it has been going from strength to strength ever since.
While the club started out offering a spectacularly wide array of sporting disciplines from cricket and swimming to horse-riding, today it focuses on bowls, tennis, golf and road-running. There are 5 bowling greens, 4 tennis courts, a road running club and an 18-hole golf course.
All of these facilities are situated on the lush grounds which are dotted with flowering shrubs, old distinguished trees and plenty of birdlife. The golf course is a typical parklands course with vibrant green fairways lined neatly with a variety of tree species. The club also offers practise facilities – a driving range and putting greens and professional golf coaching is offered on site. There is a pro-shop which offers rental equipment as well as repairs, fittings and sales.
As with any self-respecting country club, Wingate also has a fully-licensed bar, a restaurant and halfway house. There is a function facility available for hire too which can accommodate up to 300 people.
