Auckland Park Verblyf
Auckland Park is a very old suburb located north west of Johannesburg’s city centre. It is unique on many levels, not least because of its status as a residential suburb despite its proximity to the centre. It also happens to be one of Joburg’s oldest suburbs, in existence since the turn of the century, when it was treated as a holiday retreat for the city’s gentry. It was named by a visiting New Zealander who developed the area. He named it Auckland Park ostensibly because the landscape, with its gentle hill, reminded him of his home in Auckland, New Zealand.
Today Auckland Park is a wealthy area which is home to a mixture of modern homes and impressive, old stately ones. Overall though, the area has a decidedly suburban atmosphere with well-kept houses and gardens, large sidewalks and many trees. A few minutes’ down the road though and you’ll find yourself in the heart of downtown Johannesburg, seemingly worlds away.
Auckland Park is very unique because of the way the urban and suburban rub shoulders there. Apart from the original Joburg central business district, nearby areas include Melville, a funky bohemian neighbourhood brimming with bars, restaurants which spill onto the pavement, and the famous Melville Koppies, which make for a nice walk, throwing up elevated views of the city.
The gentrified neighbourhood of Newtown is also very close to Auckland Park - head to this part of town if you are interested in graffiti as it is the heart of Joburg’s street art culture.
Auckland Park is also home to the head offices of South African Broadcasting Commission as well as the University of Johannesburg.
