Augrabies Logement
The Augrabies region gets its name from the spectacular falls which cascade down into a deep gorge of granite rock.
The Augrabies Falls are found in the Northern Cape province of South Africa and make up part of the great Orange (Gariep) River. The region is similar to the Richtersveld with dry red rocks covering the landscape, giving it a lunar feel. The waterfall and gorge consists of smooth granite boulders which have been eroded over centuries.
The Khoi people who originally inhabited the area named the thundering falls ‘Aukoerebis’ which means ‘Place of Great Noise’. The later boer settlers derived the name ‘Augrabies’ from the original Khoi name for the falls, a decidedly accurate one given the deafening sound of the water hitting the gorge, especially when the river is in flood. The Augrabies Falls are 56 metres high, making them the 5th largest falls in the world, and the gorge into which they fall is unimaginably deep and roughly 18 kilometres long. The site is nothing short of breath-taking.
If you’re looking for places to stay outside of the Augrabies National Park, an array of Guest Houses and Self Catering establishments can be found within 2-3 kilometres of the falls and make a good base for exploring the area. Besides the official reserve, where you can spot black eagles and numerous plant species, there is plenty to do in the surrounding area to keep you occupied. The Blouputs Valley is very close by and offers spectacular views and draws your attention to the contrasting landscapes in this part of the world. Casting your eye over the landscape, it will change from row upon row of startling green vineyards to the dry, rocky tracts which are more typical in this far north corner of South Africa.
The Riemvasmaak Hot Springs are another attraction which draws travellers in, giving them a slightly different experience. The springs are a product of a series of volcanic eruptions, and while these have since ceased, deep underground activity still heats the springs.
