Barkly West Unterkünfte
The town of Barkley West is just one of many small town dotted across South Africa, with a tiny community and town atmosphere that most travellers will never experience unless they have a specific reason to be there.
The town is situated in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province, the driest and least populated of all the 9 provinces. The town lies north west of Kimberley, the province’s capital which is a short drive away, and sits happily on the northern bank of the Vaal River. No doubt a result of its position, irrigation is big business in Barkly West, as is dairy farming and a selection of other agricultural activities.
Even though Barkly West - which was named after Sir Henry Barkly, then Governor of the Cape Colony – is little more than a blip on the map these days, historically speaking it has been quite a player. For starters, it was the site of the first major diamond mine in the 1870’s. It has been through various incarnations though, each one bringing a new name.
Initially the settlement was known as Klipdrift (a stone ford in Dutch), a direct translation from the !Kora name, Ka-aub, but was later renamed Parkerton during the brief period when the area was known as the Klipdrift Diggers’ Republic. It has also been known as Nieuw Boshof, specifically during the Anglo-Boer War when it was occupied by Boer forces.
The town’s main attractions are the numerous heritage sites found in and around Barkly West. The Canteen Kopje for example is the site of early diamond diggings which revealed ancient fossils too, while the Barkly Bridge was the first bridge built across the Vaal River in 1885.
