Baviaanskloof refers specifically to a narrow, 200 kilometre long valley in the Eastern Cape. It is surrounded by a semi-arid Karoo landscape and a number of small towns. Baviaanskloof accommodation can be sought within the picturesque valley or in one of the interesting little Karoo towns just over the mountains.
The Baviaanskloof area is renowned as one of the biggest mohair-producing regions in the world, and the trade is centred in the stretch of towns between Willowmore, the western gateway to the Baviaanskloof, and Rietbron, a tiny town literally in the middle of nowhere. The other town included in the Baviaanskloof collection is Steytlerville, to the east of the kloof, and a charming little Karoo town in its own right.
A visit to the region should include stops at one or more of these small Karoo towns, with their historical buildings, Karoo hospitality, insights into the mohair industry and traditional Karoo lifestyle. However, people mainly pass through them in order to glimpse the awe-inspiring Baviaanskloof itself.
The valley consists of 3 main biomes – Spekboomveld and Valley Bushveld to the north, Cape Fynbos to the south and Knysna Forest Vegetation along the side slopes. These varied biomes attract a wide variety of birdlife, which in turn attract keen bird watchers.
An ideal way to experience the kloof is by taking the scenic road, built by renowned engineer Thomas Bain, which traverses the valley. It takes you across low bridges over small rivers, over stomach churning passes and will expose you to some of the most spectacular scenery you could hope to encounter. This route is recommended for 4x4’s only.
Apart from myriad 4x4 routes, bird watching and checking out the little towns, the Baviaanskloof also offers some breath-taking hiking trails.
If you love remote beauty and exploring small farming communities, you should consider this area. You can reserve Baviaanskloof accommodation on Sleeping-OUT.
