Beaufort West Logement
Beaufort West is a reasonably small town in the Western Cape’s central Karoo. Situated on the N1 highway, it is the largest town in the region and acts as the hub for the surrounding farms – mostly sheep farms.
Due to its location, Beaufort West is convenient overnight stop for motorists travelling between Johannesburg and Cape Town. The scenery around town is of the semi-arid Karoo sort, an empty landscape but gripping all the same.
The climate is cold and dry in winter and summer days are hot, punctuated by sporadic rainfall, usually in the form of thunderstorms. Generally though, the sky remains cloudless, giving carte blanch to the myriad stars.
While Beaufort West couldn’t be called a tourist mecca, it does have some attractions for passing tourists. A self-guided historic walk through the town is a nice way to pass an hour or two and the Dutch Reformed Church and old Town Hall have both been declared national monuments. On the subject of history, Beaufort West was founded in 1818 and called Beaufort but had a name change a few years later to avoid confusion with Port Beaufort in the Western Cape and Fort Beaufort in the Eastern Cape.
Just outside Beaufort West is the Karoo National Park, the town’s real draw card. Amongst the shrubby landscape you have the opportunity of spotting not one but two of South Africa’s most endangered species, both having been successfully reintroduced. The riverine rabbit and the black rhino both call the park home. In addition the park boasts numerous buck species, ostrich and 5 tortoise species (more than any other South African park). Within the park, visitors are invited to hike the 11km trail, park off in the bird hide or go on a guided game drive. There is also a designated 4x4 track which can be undertaken independently or with a park official.
The Beaufort West area is also renowned as a site for fossils, so any accomplished or aspiring archaeologists will be well catered for.
Whether you stop by for just a night at one of the hotels or choose to while away a few days in one of the many self-catering establishment, Beaufort West has a lot to offer.

Beaufort West
Unfortunately there was a unpleasant encounter, luckily not anything to do with us. After booking in and getting everything sorted at our lodging, we went to go look for a shop to buy the essentials. We witnessed a person stealing a bag of potatoes from the back of someone's bakkie. Unfortunately for the thief I jumped out of our vehicle and quickly took the potato bag from him and returned it to the owner. But this incident is just a minority of the things we experience in our own towns and cities.
It will definitely not deter us from returning to Beaufort West.
