Bedfordview is an upmarket suburb in the east of Johannesburg, South Africa’s commercial hub. It lies on the famous East Rand, and like many of Joburg’s suburbs, has a history steeped in stories of the gold rush. The town of Bedfordview, because it once was independent of Johannesburg, began life as many do – a farm. The large farm was known as Elandsfontein until it was subdivided during the heyday of the Witwatersrand Gold Reef (that is, the gold rush). One of the buyers was a Mr Farrar, who named his plot Bedford after his hometown in England.
As is often the case, the group of farms developed into a settlement, which needed a name. A competition was held and a girl who thought the view from Bedford farm was particularly pretty, won and the area became known as Bedford’s View, and later Bedfordview. As Johannesburg expanded simultaneously with the little town, Bedfordview was enveloped by the city.
Today it is an affluent suburb, quiet with leafy streets and pretty gardens. It is surrounded by other wealthy suburbs like Houghton, Rosebank, Germiston and Edenvale. It is also close to the Johannesburg CBD, which is currently part of a gentrification project, and is one of the closest suburbs to OR Tambo International Airport.
Some of the attractions in the area include the impressive Eastgate Shopping Centre, Gillooly’s Farm, which is a slice of bucolic life in the city, offering a lake with picnic spots under the trees and a view over Kensington and the northern suburbs. There is also the Bruma Lake Flea Market, which is a tranquil spot on a transformed sewage catchment area.
Bedfordview is an especially convenient suburb for visiting businesspeople who want to come home to a peaceful environment after a busy day in the city.
